About Eugene
Eugene, Oregon is a city surrounded by beautiful scenery and filled with its own brand of art, culture, and recreation. Its location in the southern end of the Willamette Valley and only 70 miles from the stunning Oregon coast makes Eugene the perfect base for exploring everything that Oregon has to offer. Probably most people are unaware the college cult movie “Animal House” was filmed in Eugene and on the campus of the University.
The city also has its fair share of museums and galleries, so between this and all the outdoor activities available it is easy to understand why Eugene refers to itself as the “World’s Greatest City of the Arts & Outdoors”.
The Willamette Valley is the heart of Oregon wine country and Eugene has more than a dozen of its own vineyards and wineries worth visiting to taste of this area’s famous Pinot Noirs and Pinto Gris varieties.
The best way to get a feel for the unique ambience of Eugene is a visit to their Fifth Street Market. Wander through the market and top to enjoy the shops, restaurants, and galleries while listening to local musicians perform.
Eugene’s history dates to 1846 when Eugene Franklin Skinner built the first cabin in this area that was used as a trading post. It then became an official post office in 1850 when the area was known as Skinner’s Mudhole. Skinner officially established Eugene as a town in 1862 and eventually operated a ferry to cross the Willamette River.
