Eugene’s history dates to 1846 when Eugene Franklin Skinner built the first cabin in this area that was used as a trading post. It then became an official post office in 1850 when the area was known as Skinner’s Mudhole. Skinner officially established Eugene as a town in 1862 and eventually operated a ferry to cross the Willamette River.
